I would
like to be a volunteer working with animals. Do I need any special
training for this and what type of institutions can use my help?
If you would
like to become a volunteer working with animals, you may want to
start with the humane society, a vet or kennel. Most zoos don't
accept volunteers in animal handling positions (liability reasons),
but possibly some rehabilitation centers would.
As far as summer
help, many zoos employ people that have the proper college training
and animal-care experience. But, if you've had neither one of these,
just apply for any job available at the zoo. Perhaps during the
summers while you are pursuing your animal degree is a good time
to get your foot in the door. It really doesn't matter whether you
are serving up hot dogs or taking tickets -- while you are at the zoo,
the staff will get to know you and watch your work ethic, etc. Keep
your eyes open for an opening in an animal area, and then apply!
