Interview: Jack Hanna

You have traveled the globe bringing fascinating stories to the Animal Adventures audience. What has been your favorite location?

That is hard to say. Everyplace is phenomenal as far as location shoots. I love Africa, obviously. Nepal. Alaska is one of my favorites because it is a closer place to get to than Africa. But, I love them all and it's not just the wildlife, it's the people. The people sometimes decide where the wildlife is going to be.

Is there a place you have yet to travel to that is on your wish list?

I want to go to Burma, Sumatra and Indonesia. I haven't been there yet.

What would people be surprised to know about Jack Hanna?

That I'm not as dumb as I look! No, people look at Jack as the clown on David Letterman or ask-the-intellect on Good Morning America and I'm a person just like everybody else, fascinated by wildlife. I love animals but I'm not an expert in any field. I'm not a zoologist or biologist. I'm just a person trying to bring the animal world to the viewer just like I see it.

You probably have one of the most hectic travel intensive schedules of anyone I can think of. What do you do when you have downtime?

Downtime - I love to hike in Montana. Hiking is the most favorite thing I do. Sightseeing. Going in a boat and looking at animals. That is the most relaxing thing I do but hiking, especially.

I have noticed that you and the crew are a tight-knit group. That must be due to some of the precarious situations that you have been in. Are there any memorable moments that you would like to share that haven't been caught on film?

I'm sure there are some we couldn't put on film! The film crew and I have to get along because we all work together. You are out four or five weeks at a time, eating together, working together, twenty four hours a day. We do have a good time together. None of us takes ourselves too seriously. I think that's the key to anything, really and we don't do that. But, when it comes to working, we all know what it takes to get the shows filmed and we all have our own job and we do it.

Lastly, what exactly was it that happened two days ago that caused you to fall in the lake?

I was trying to unload a plane with petrol fuel that was being brought into the lodge. I guess I was down there at the bottom, waiting for the fuel. They thought they would have a little joke with me and the fuel. A 500 gallon can hit the water and I lost my contacts and everything else. I about froze to death!
