Have you had any close encounters here while filming?

Well, let's see. I had one outside the cabin last night.

That counts!

YEAH, that counts. We have actually come close when we were cruising down the river filming from the boat. Guy, the cameraman, was out with our underwater camera trying to get some sockeye salmon under the water and he walked near this point and virtually walked into a bear.

You see one, and it's like, "uh-oh." But what you don't want to do is panic and run away. Then the bear's going to see you as prey. I walked on one yesterday trying to find a shooting location for something we were going to do with Jack and he was determined to catch some salmon himself, bear-style. So I walked up a little bit from where we gathered on the river and some people were across the river and I saw them doing this (waving). I took a few more steps and then stopped and realized that I was about ten feet from a bear. It was a sow with her cubs. And that's not a good situation because, of course, she's going to be very protective. I just sort of casually, coolly and calmly as I could backtracked and I was on my way and that was fine.

Being around animals in general, it keeps you from going into a panic; in Africa, stuck in a Landover, and surrounded by lions; being down in a shark cage and having a great white taking up the full frame of your camera - about six inches from the other side of the wire. Diving with sharks in the Caribbean and they're all around you.

Most of the people that have been traveling with us on this trip, understand right off that the worst thing you can do is panic. The people who are around animals tend to really respect them and they aren't afraid of them. That's what we do every place we go. We don't do anything stupid. But, we try to get as close as we can for the good shot - essentially for the viewer. We want them to be right there in the front seat where we are.

We certainly look forward to those episodes. Any parting thoughts?

I hope the show is something fun to watch because we certainly have a lot of fun when we're out in the field producing the show and even back in the studio putting it together. I think for all of us, Jack included, it's the most fun any of us have ever had. It's the way you look at life and we're all pretty happy and right with the world. When you put a bunch of people together like that, producing a television show, I hope it reflects the way we feel about each other and that we're having a good time. That's really what we try to do is just have fun and educate people at the same time.
