Interview: Kathryn Deyerle

You were on the Kulik River earlier today, watching bears. How was your morning?

It was· you can't describe it. I'm not sure we'll be able to capture on film what we're seeing. It's unbelievable. I'm sure I couldn't capture it in stills. Hopefully, the crew will be able to show it to our viewers. It is breathtaking.

I spent most of my time just sitting in the boat taking in the sights and the smells and the sounds. You just turn, and look, and there is a bear right there - right next to you, having breakfast. It is just unbelievable. It is so hard to put it into words.

How many bears do you think you saw this morning?

Twenty.

Twenty bears in one morning?

Absolutely. Absolutely. It was incredible - and each one of them was different. Some were black, some were light tan. Some of them were huge, some of them were younger. It was unbelievable.

And I understand, this afternoon you had an encounter with a bear coming back from a hike?

A sow and her cubs. Three of us were just walking along in a big, open space and I was watching the ground so I wouldn't fall down. I looked up and there she was coming towards us and - it just takes your breath away. It's a rush. It's exciting but it's very scary because you know she can take you if she wants to and all of a sudden you forget everything you've learned about what you're supposed to do.

She kept coming towards us but eventually she just went on with her cubs. I couldn't get it on film because, I just couldn't! It was unbelievable. Like nothing you've ever experienced. And the crew was right there and they filmed a lot of it so hopefully we'll be able to share it with the viewers and they can feel that same rush.
