North to Alaska

Day Five - Take me to the river. Fishes in the water...

This brown bear couldn't have looked more comfortable, soaking up the sun on the beach near the mouth of the Kulik River. He sat up as our boat cruised by.

I should state that many of these pictures are taken from distances farther away than they may seem.

Do you doubt the excitement and pure joy visitors experience while on the river? One guest opted out of a plane tour of the area, sending his video camera with another guest instead. "Tape anything good, " I believe were his words. Just couldn't tear himself away...

Behold! The Sharp-tailed Grouse. Sharp-tails gather each spring at traditional “leks” where males display and compete for mates.

Alaskans call the first mountain-top snow of the season, Termination Dust. It is a dramatic bookend to the changing season. It was this morning - after a chilly, rainy night - that we could see it for the first time.

After staring at the mountains all week, this singular change was dramatic.
