Last Day, Glacier Bay
In Alaska the weather can change in a moment’s notice and alter any travel arrangements you may have previously made. Many people around me are getting upset because our flight from Gustavus Airport back to Juneau has been canceled.

The good news is that a boat has been arranged which can get us to Juneau some time tonight. Although, we're not sure just when. We are still in Glacier Bay National Park and we have been in the park lodge for several hours now. My thinking is… what better place to be stuck than Glacier Bay National Park!

Since we have at least 2-3 hours to wait, Dad and I are going to take a walk around the Park and get some fresh air before the long journey ahead. Dad does not like boats very much, but he loves to hike, so I am going to try to ease his mind by going for a walk in the forest.

The walk was beautiful and we made it back just in time to board the ferry. We arrived along with more than 100 other people – a very tight squeeze onto the ferry. We had to board from a floating dock which was pitching around in the waves. Some people don’t realize this, but film crews like ours have to bring dozens of heavy pieces of luggage which store the cameras, tripods, tapes, monitors and other equipment. When we film in remote locations it is often difficult to get all the equipment on small planes and boats. Fortunately, we all have the routine down.

We arrived back at Juneau quite late and everyone was exhausted after the slow ferry ride back. We grabbed a quick dinner at the Westmark Baranof Hotel and then went up to our rooms. It has been a full day so everyone is going to bed early in preparation for their flights home tomorrow.

The one thing I learned today is that being flexible while you are traveling is the key to enjoying the experience. I travel because I want to experience new places, different cultures, fascinating wildlife and remote locations. It is inevitable that things will not always go as planned. So, immerse yourself in the surroundings and keep a positive attitude!

I am leaving Juneau at 7:15 a.m., packed and ready to go, but hesitant as I feel I could spend at least two more weeks here. Juneau is a wonderful town and the people made us feel very welcome.

Final thought on Alaska:
You can read all of the guidebooks you want, but nothing can prepare you for the Last Frontier. Everything in Alaska is big. The glaciers, the whales and the bears were all much larger than I had imagined. Glacier Bay is truly breathtaking and it is the perfect place for wildlife enthusiasts. I can not wait to return!
