I am packed and ready to go! I have my camera, lots of film, warm clothes, hiking boots, and of course my binoculars. I can’t wait to see this part of Alaska and experience my first voyage surrounded by glaciers. I have never seen a glacier before nor a humpback whale, so this trip is a real dream come true.

I have always been fascinated by glaciers and I am hoping that I will get the chance to see one calve. That is what they call it when a huge piece of ice tumbles off of the glacier creating huge waves.

It’s 8:00 p.m. and I am in Seattle getting ready to catch my 9:15 p.m. flight to Juneau, Alaska where my adventure will begin. I can’t wait!

I have finally arrived! It’s 11:30 p.m. and I have just made it to my hotel room. I’ve been traveling for over 20 hours and I am ready to hit the pillow.

Prior to setting sail on our trip, we were treated to a performance of native Alaskan songs performed by La Xut Nax Sati Yatxi which translates to 'All Nation's Children.'

The performers who were of many ages, were in brightly colored ceremonial dress. The performance included singing, chanting, clapping and other acoustic elements. They danced as they performed - all against the backdrop of the inside passage.

We were told by everyone we met that we were incredibly lucky with the weather. Some people even said it was the best summer Glacier Bay had seen in years. The days were bright and sunny with a steady cool breeze... absolutely perfect.

The strange thing was getting used to the sun coming up at 4 am and setting around midnight. Since it is difficult to find blinds that fit portholes, I taped a black garbage bag over the window so I could get a little sleep.
