lions Day 3, Vumbura, Botswana - From Johannesburg, South Africa we flew North to Maun, Botswana. From there we boarded light aircraft and headed to our first camp, Vumbura in the Okavango Delta.

During the flight we were close enough to the ground to spot animals. I saw a herd of elephants - and one was charging the others. We landed on the dried mud and were off in our jeeps to camp.

Our first game drive was nothing short of incredible. Having already spotted baboons on the drive in to camp, we were fortunate to spot a raun and impala turn suddenly and look towards the grass. There, behind the tall blades was a male and female lion!

Our driver, Kay, took us off road to get a better look. I couldn't believe how close we were. There turned out to be two lions as you can see in the picture above. Wow!

How I managed so many incredible sightings on my first stop in Botswana, I'll never know. Jack's producer later took me aside to explain to me that in his eight trips to Africa, this was the first time he or his wife had ever seen Sable in the bush. And there they were.

The first day at Vumbura was overwhelming!

The wildebeest were among our most frequent sightings. The adult males kept to themselves, staking out their own turf. The adult females roam in large herds from place to place.

On occasion, we would watch a male try (in vain) to keep the female herd on his land. As other males approached from different directions to coax them away, he would race from corner to corner, chasing them off.
