Day 10, Chitabe - The lions were extraordinary! We were already running late on our way back to camp when we spotted a single lion near a few trees.

It wasn't until we got closer that we discovered that there were eleven in all! The rest were sleeping in the shade. Incredible!

This may be my favorite picture from the trip.

This future Lion King was kind enough to awaken from his slumber for a great photograph. The younger cubs seemed to be more interested in our vehicle than the adults who were, no doubt, somewhat accustomed to seeing them.

I was told by a guide that the animals do distinguish between the familiar camp-based vehicles and those that are strange to them. Fearing danger, they almost always run from vehicles they are not accustomed to.

The zebras were stunning creatures. I admit to rooting for the baby zebra we saw that was being pursued by a cheetah (it escaped). It all happened too quickly to photograph, however.
zebra Zebra stripes serve the useful purpose of identification. When baby zebras are born, the mother breaks away from the herd into a much smaller group. During this period of a few months, the baby "imprints" the mother's stripe pattern. Later, in a group of perhaps hundreds, the young zebra will always know who mom is.
The entire Chitabe Camp was raised off of the ground which provided a unique setting for our 2 night stay.
